With a tight race for playoffs underway, both the Lobos and Spartans played with intensity Wednesday night. The Lobos struck first with a solid corner kick goal. After the powerful Spartan forward Kendal White was forced out of the remainder of the game due to potential injury, the Lobos struck again to take a 2-0 lead before the conclusion of the first half.
Rather than sulking in disappointment, the Spartans came out in the second half with fire. Substitute players stepped up to fill key roles, and the Spartans expertly handled necessary position adjustments. Kylie Guevara Sanchez and Sofia Salgado played solid defense to keep the Spartans in the game. Midway through the second half, Sara Medina sent a diagonal through ball to Angelita Mejicanos who slotted it with one-touch to an open Alexia Santos for a poised shot into the goal. Still down 1-2, the Spartans refused to give up. With two minutes remaining, Madison Koteras forced a corner kick. Yanitza Garay, adding to her own school career assist record, sent a perfect ball to senior Abril Olivo. She finished the cross with a header to the far post.
The final score was 2-2.
Each Spartan player also used this game as an opportunity to honor her favorite teacher by wearing the name of a teacher on her wrist.
